C-Biotech and Trafiroad are developing a biocomposite to serve as a traffic pole
Current materials used for traffic poles are either steel, plastics or hardwood. All of these are not very sustainable either due to long supply chains and/or the use of virgin materials.
In the context of climate change abatement and resources scarceness, Trafiroad and C-Biotech have joined R&D forces to develop a biocomposite from industrial hemp that can serve as biobased, sustainable and circular alternative.
The R&D comprises of:
* Finding a good composition of the product
* Testing the strength and other requirements related to the specific application
* Testing for circularity, maximizing product lifetime and zero waste
* Performing an LCA
We are making good progress and produced a first prototype. We expect the roll-out at scale for Q1 2024. Moreover, we can use the same composite for other outdoor applications.
